Cruachan Power Station
440 MW pumped storage plant built inside Ben Cruachan in Argyll.
Overview
Opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1965, its turbine hall sits in a cavern deep inside the mountain, earning it the name Hollow Mountain. Water is pumped from Loch Awe to a reservoir high on the mountain. Owner Drax has proposed a major expansion.
