Wairakei Power Station
Pioneering geothermal plant near Taupo, commissioned in 1958.
Overview
Wairakei was the second large scale geothermal power station in the world after Larderello and the first to tap a wet steam field. Decades of extraction caused ground subsidence and changed nearby geyser activity. It still runs alongside newer plants in the Taupo Volcanic Zone.
