Aswan High Dam
2,100 MW dam on the Nile creating Lake Nasser, the engine of modern Egypt.
Overview
Completed in 1970, the dam ended destructive Nile floods, added drought storage and roughly doubled Egyptian electricity supply at the time. Twelve 175 MW turbines still anchor the national grid. Silt trapped behind the dam forced fertilizer use up and raised delta erosion concerns.
