Itaipu Dam
14,000 MW binational hydroelectric dam on the Parana River between Brazil and Paraguay.
Overview
Twenty 700 MW turbines commissioned from 1984 have supplied roughly 90 percent of Paraguay power and about a tenth of Brazilian demand in strong years. Itaipu has generated over 3 billion MWh since startup, more than any other hydro plant, with annual records above 103 TWh. The two countries split output under a 1973 treaty.
