Belchatow Power Station
About 5,100 MW lignite station, the largest power plant in Europe by capacity.
Overview
Open pit mines feed units commissioned 1982 to 2011 beneath a 300 m chimney, the tallest structure in Poland. Belchatow has ranked among the continents top carbon emitters, making it central to EU climate debates. A carbon capture project was cancelled in 2020 and units now phase out toward the 2030s.
