Akosombo Dam
1,020 MW dam on the Volta River that industrialized Ghana power.
Overview
Built 1961 to 1966 with World Bank backing, Akosombo powered the Valco aluminum smelter and created Lake Volta, the largest reservoir by surface area on Earth. Drought years cut output sharply, pushing Ghana into thermal and gas buildout.
