Ataturk Dam
2,400 MW rockfill dam on the Euphrates, the centerpiece of the Southeastern Anatolia Project.
Overview
Completed in 1990, its eight 300 MW turbines make it the largest hydroelectric plant in Turkey. The reservoir also feeds the Sanliurfa irrigation tunnels that water the Harran plain. Downstream Syria and Iraq have long protested reduced Euphrates flows.
