Belo Monte Dam
11,233 MW run of river complex on the Xingu River in Para, the largest hydro plant wholly in Brazil.
Overview
Turbines entered service from 2016 and the last unit was completed in 2019. Its run of river design limits reservoir size, so output falls sharply in the dry season. The project displaced thousands of people and drew protests from indigenous groups, including Kayapo leader Raoni, over damage to the Volta Grande of the Xingu.
