Tucurui Dam
8,370 MW dam on the Tocantins River in the Amazon.
Overview
Phase one finished in 1984 to power aluminum smelters in Para, and phase two added capacity by 2007. Tucurui flooded 2,850 square km of rainforest and displaced over 30,000 people, becoming a global case study in hydro tradeoffs. It remains the largest fully Brazilian power plant.
