Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant
Site of the 1986 reactor 4 accident, the worst nuclear disaster in history.
Overview
Four RBMK-1000 reactors near Pripyat supplied Ukrainian grids from 1977. The April 1986 explosion and fire spread contamination across Europe and forced a 2,600 square km exclusion zone. Units 1 to 3 kept running until 2000, and the New Safe Confinement arch sealed the ruin in 2016.
